An opening like this becomes an invisible letter and I have to make a real effort to carry on reading and find out if there is a worthwhile application hidden under those words.
Heck I need something to wake me up, something to excite my interest. If I'm not excited, how am I going to excite my client? If this is my first impression of the candidate, where do I go from there?

The objective of your covering letter is to get the recruitment consultant or prospective employer to read your details and act. You want them to call you for an interview. But these people are busy, very busy and soon forget the application that didn't create an impact.
Your opening paragraph must command attention and create the interest. The most effective way of creating interest is by you yourself being interested in the job or position advertised. And the easiest way to do this is to say - "I am really interested in the job you have advertised" - then go on to tell them why you are interested.

You further show your interest and enthusiasm by demonstrating your knowledge of their business.

Your second paragraph of your covering letter shows how you match their requirements and your final paragraph should be a positive, forward-looking close. Do pay attention to any specific requests, such as salary or re-location issues.

This way you stand out to the reader as someone who is worth meeting. Someone who is interested and enthusiastic is much more attractive to have around. And highly visible.

Write a Super Resume

How to Write a Resume - Objective VS Summary Statements

It's hard to write a resume. Most of us are not "born salespeople." Just mentioning the word "sales" usually sends a shiver of fear up our spines. Your name, address and phone number (obviously). But also your email address.

While this might be cute among friends, to a prospective employer it shows poor taste, and a lack of maturity (since she's in her late 40's). If you don't have a professional sounding email, create a new one just for your job search. You can get free email addresses on Google, Yahoo or Hotmail.

STYLE

The Objective Statement

An objective statement is for people who are either just starting out or changing careers. Your resume should state your desired job and field (engineering for instance) and demonstrate that you have the skills or education (if not the job background) for the position.

The RIGHT Way to State An Objective:
To apply my knowledge acquired through my Masters degree in Graphic Design and internship at ABC Advertising Company to an entry level position in the art and marketing department of a major magazine.

The Summary Statement

A Summary statement is for people that have been working for a while. It "sums up" your skills and positions using strong "action words" and states your qualifications up-front. It's a way for a prospective employer to "glance" at your resume and determine if it's worth reading further. It should outline briefly your skills and background and anything you feel you did that was "above and beyond" the nature of the job you held.

BAD Summary

Department manager for 15 member department in large marketing firm. Managed schedules and oversaw daily department duties and workflow.

The reason this is BAD is that it's generic. Lots of people have jobs like that. What set you apart? Let's try again:

GOOD Summary

Accomplished department manager with 10 years experience. Created highly synergistic department of 15 creative marketing employees that generated over $5 million dollars in annual sales through applying teamwork and incentives/rewards.

3 Advanced Cover Letter Strategies For Offshore Drilling Employment

When looking for offshore drilling employment, and in fact any job that requires a written application, the cover letter is arguably the most important element. It is what gets your resume read... or not. If you flub it, you can kiss your chance of an interview goodbye. Before looking at the three advanced strategies, let's look at three important basic principles of writing this document.

Basic Principles
The first of these basic principles is to send more job applications out. It is common to send 5 job applications and get no response. But send out 100 competently written cover letters/resume and you should start to see some decent results. Prosecuting a successful job hunt is much the same as prosecuting a successful war. You need both quantity and quality.

The second basic principle is to make sure your letter looks neat and professional. Yes, this is important even for a job that requires physical labor like an offshore roustabout or roughneck. Besides looking neat, the spelling and grammar needs to be correct. However, you do not need to pay a professional writer to write your cover letter. Just run it through the spelling and grammar checker in MS-Word. You can also do the same thing using OpenOffice (a free clone of MS-Word).

The third basic principle is to make sure you include the job title in the subject heading of your letter. Use the same job title that is in the advertisement. Include any codes that are in the advertisement. This is important. If you do not tell the oil company why you are sending them your cover letter, they will trash it without reading it.

The three basic principles above seem laughably obvious. But too many job seekers are too rushed, or are too lazy or simply too careless to do things right. They basically shoot themselves in the foot. Now, let's move on to the three advanced principles. Although the following strategies do not guarantee you an interview, they will definitely get you a foot up in the game.

This means you should not be working now or serving out your notice.  Part two is to end your cover letter by asking them to call you for an interview. Successful salesmen know this last strategy very well (both parts of it). It is what makes them successful - daring to make an irresistible offer and daring to close the deal.

Violate the three basic principles above and you may as well just stick to flipping burgers for McDonalds. But the three advanced strategies are what will give you a leg up on 90% of your rivals.
